Wikis

I liked the common craft video for wikis. In fact, i think the common craft videos have been one of the most useful tools in the 2.0 thing. i like how they visually simplify everything. Not that all the information isn't just terrific! I wish i had used a wiki in planning my parent's 50th anniversary of wedded bliss party. I'm kinda unclear on what happens when there's a dispute on the content. Do people just keep editing over each other? It appears that for a wiki to work well you need dedicated contributors. It's pretty amazing to of all the volunteer editing that goes on at Wikipedia. I'd like to give it a try for the next round of programming for pta if i could find a wiki that's simple to use. I get the impression they can get cumbersome. I can see how it would be very useful for branch programming or any other event planning, assuming it's a collaborative effort.

streaming video

My son tried to guess how to make a stop motion animation with legos when he was 7 (or 6?). It was terrible, but illustrates how young we're becoming engrossed in this stuff. What's not to love about YouTube and visual gratification? Streaming fun! right now it seems difficult to come up with an example that's not vulgar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_whyjdt5Qso

I'm not a tv watcher, in fact, i'm the demographic that the ad campaign for the switch to digital tv is trying to reach. Yes, those are my bent rabbit ears! So Hulu and Fancast are great for me and the occasional curiosity to know what the buzz iz about. It looks like Hulu has more movies and plenty to keep me busy for a long while. Thanks for the tip! I imagine library staff can point patrons to these resources for dvd's we don't have in the collection.

social networking

My teenage neice introduced me to facebook last year and at the time she and her 14 year old friends could not get enough of it. I guess at 15 they're kinda over it, in fact i think it's uncool now in the little circle. Funny how things like this go in and out of favor. I think it's a pretty useful way to keep in touch with people far away and just for plain fun. i realize there are differences in why a person would use one or the other, but i see a lot of overlapping with blogging...and i found several people's myspace pages that had similar content to their blog- mostly due to lack of time, no doubt, but it's really hard to imagine maintaining all these things long term. i need more sleep than i used to. Anyway, it was fun to look for long lost people and, like blogging, fun to see people's creativity and "other" side.

maps--google earth

i can get lost in maps so being waaaaaaaaaaaaay behind on this project i took the opportunity to jump ahead. Besides, it seems like everyone i know is travelling somewhere this summer so i had to check out: Abu Dhabi, Amman, Jordan, Guadalajara, Biarritz France, AND Walworth, Wisconsin. I looked for the elephant and giraffe statues in Tower Park in Delevan, WI, but they're not visible. I noticed there was a big difference in image quality between different locations, sometime just from neighborhood to neighborhood; but, WOW what a great tool! i love how you can fly across the planet to your next location!

I had difficulty adding an image via Blogger's photo uploader. i made several attempts to upload something from Flickr but the image wouldn't display, just a blank box. I'm sure it's something simple, but I'm giving up to try Flickr's blogging tool.

I've been meaning to get a Flickr account if for nothing more than backing up photos for a long time so thanks SIL 20 for the kick in the pants!

Pandora

Wow! i created a Pandora account and the first random (i think) artist to play was an old favorite, Tish Hinojosa. I believe i'm hooked! this is fun!!! i'm kinda an npr junkie and have been streaming kuow and others for a long time, but i like the idea of having my own music mix to go along with it.
